Face-to-face debate: Macron starts as favorite, Le Pen brings the lesson learned

This Wednesday, Emmanuel Macron and Marine Le Pen will face each other in the televised electoral debate. Key appointment for both, who, not having enough voters of their own to reach the Elysee, will have to convince those of other parties.

Emmanuel Macron Y Marine LePen many of its tricks are played to achieve the presidency of France in the televised debate of this Wednesday (8:50 p.m.), that could be key in next Sunday’s election.

Neither candidate has enough staunch supporters to bring them to power next Sunday. So the objective of both for this second round and, more specifically, of the debate, it will be to convince voters that the other candidate is worse.

The outgoing liberal president and the far-right leader are focusing these last few hours on preparing for this important duel and have no public events scheduled, facing a confrontation that could be much more decisive than the one they had five years ago.

The polls agree that Macron has slightly increased his lead over Le Pen since the first lap (the average is now 55.2% vs. 44.8%), so he heads into the debate head-to-head as the favourite.

But neither is in a position to trust each other. Crucial to the outcome will be what left-wing voters do, and so will abstention, estimated at 26%. Macron’s style and policies have upset many on the left and it will be harder for him than in 2017 to garner enough support to keep the far right out of power. He will try to take advantage of the debate to recover that dissatisfied vote and mobilize the vote of those who doubt whether to vote or not.

The 2017 launch ended with an overwhelming victory for the now president, according to all analysts and the media. Partly on her own merit, partly because of Le Pen’s poor performance, whose unfortunate expressions and tones showed a dislocated Le Pen, without the stature of a head of state.

Le Pen Arrive now better prepared than five years ago. He has already advanced that he would dedicate two full days to preparation, because “it is an important moment”, after last week he recognized that the debate five years ago was “the biggest failure” of his political career.

His behavior in the campaign, without going into tricky and controversial issues, suggests that he can focus his debate in the same tone, more conciliatory and serene than five years ago.

All options are open, anyone can win, anyone can lose.
