The former Minister of Economy and Finance, David Tuesta, warns that if Congress approves a sixth withdrawal of funds from the AFP, affiliates could withdraw another S/27,000 million, which in total would be equivalent to more than S/ 90,000 million in just over two years (more than 10% of GDP).
Along these lines, he specified that the five approved withdrawals between 2020 and 2021 represented about S / 66,000 million of the affiliates’ retirement savings.
In addition, he asked the Peruvian congressmen to emulate the Chilean deputies, who recently rejected a fifth withdrawal of funds affiliated with the AFP.
“As we can see, the Chilean political class shows greater responsibility than in Peru regarding withdrawals from pension funds. They understand the damage this will do to families, growth and the current inflation situation. Previous withdrawals approved in Chile have only represented 10% of the total funds existing before the pandemic. In Peru, the five approved withdrawals have meant the departure of a third of the total. All limits were exceeded here,” he noted.
