President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyhas stated that He’s prepared” to negotiate directly with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putinto end the war, but insists that is not ready to recognize the independence of Donbas and Russian sovereignty over Crimeatwo of the demands of the Kremlin to end the invasion of Ukraine.
In an interview on CNN, the president thus affirmed that he will not assume “any commitment that affects the territorial integrity and sovereignty” from Ukraine.
“I am ready to negotiate with him (Putin). I have been for the last two years and I believe that without negotiations we cannot end this war,” Zelensky acknowledged.
For this reason, he has defended that “we have to use any opportunity to negotiate and talk with Putin. If these attempts fail, that will mean the third world war“, he expressed about the negotiations that both countries have held in Belarus.
But despite his predisposition, Zelenski does not give in and affirms that “as president and citizen” he cannot recognize the independence of Ukrainian territories. He further adds that the Ukrainian people have made it clear, because “they have not received the russian soldiers with a bouquet of flowersbut with courage and weapons in hand”.
On the eventual entry into NATO, Zelenski has assured that heto the same Alliance has ruled out admitting Ukraine, for which he considers that kyiv should look for “other security alternatives” with its allies. He further believes that if Ukraine had been admitted to NATO membership, the war would not have started.
