European Union ministers will discuss support for Ukraine and a new defense strategy

The EU foreign and defense ministers will also discuss a new package of sanctions against Russia.

The Foreign and Defense Ministers of the European Union will address the situation in Ukraine tomorrow, willing to study more props to that country and more sanctions against Russia for having invaded it, and they hope to support the new security and defense strategy of the EU for the next ten years.

Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine will be the central theme of this combined Council of Ministers, which will be chaired by the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell.

In the first place, the foreign ministers will exchange points of view on the conflict, open to discussing a new sanctions package against Moscow after those that have already severely hit the Russian economy, the oligarchs and the entourage of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

In the Council, the foreign ministers will address the multilateral and diplomatic channel and the dissuasive and support measures for Ukraine.

Later on, the Community Defense Ministers will also hold a session with Ukraine as the protagonist, specifically the aspects related to the security that involves war and fight against disinformation.

The EU is now close to having validated all of the 500 million euros it allocated for finance lethal and non-lethal military material so that Ukraine can defend itself against the Russian invaders, and is preparing to give the green light to another aid for the same amount soon, according to community sources.

On the other hand, in a joint session, the EU foreign and defense ministers plan to approve what is known as “Strategic Compass”an initiative proposed by Borrell at the Twenty-seven to give political and strategic guidelines in the community’s defense and security policy for up to ten years and enhance the role of the EU as a provider of security for its citizens and in the world.

Among the main proposals is a modular rapid intervention force of up to 5,000 troops that would be fully operational by 2025, better military mobilityinvest more and better together in defendingreinforce the resistance against hybrid or cyber attacks or increase the cooperation with other international partners and with NATO.
