Pope Francis stepped up his implicit criticism of Russia on Friday, calling the war in Ukraine a “perverse abuse of power” waged by partisan interests that has condemned defenseless people to brutal violence.
Since the war began, the pontiff has not used the word “Russia” in his sentences, but has used phrases like “unacceptable armed aggression” to convey your opinion.
“The tragedy of the war taking place in the heart of Europe has left us stunned”, Francisco said, adding that few people would have imagined scenes similar to those of the two world wars of the 20th century.
This new condemnation of the war came in a message addressed to a conference of the Catholic Church in Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia, one of the countries bordering Ukraine that has opened its doors to refugees.
“Once again, humanity is threatened by a perverse abuse of power and partisan interests that condemn defenseless people to suffer forms of brutal violence.”, maintained the Pontiff.
Moscow claims that its action is a “special military operation” intended not to occupy territory, but to demilitarize and “denazify” to your neighbor.
However, the pope has rejected that term, saying it could not be considered “just a military operation”, but a war that had unleashed “rivers of blood and tears”.
