Xi Jinping asks Joe Biden to work together for world peace

Chinese President, Xi Jinpingtoday urged his American counterpart, Joe Biden, to work together for world peace and said that the crisis in Ukraine is something that “they would not have wanted to see”.

Xi conveyed these views to Biden during a telematic meeting, the first held by the two leaders since last November, according to a preliminary transcript from the official agency Xinhua.

“China and the US should not only guide their relations on the right path, but also share their international responsibilities and work for global tranquility and stability,” said the Chinese president.

The Chinese president conveyed to his American colleague: “As permanent members of the United Nations Security Council and as the world’s two largest economies, we must not only advance our relations on the right path, but also share our international responsibility and work for the world peace and stability.

Xi stressed to Biden that peace and development face “serious challenges” and the world scene has changed since their last conversation, on November 16, 2021, the first formally held by both since the arrival of the second at the White House, in January of that same year.

“The facts show again that countries should not go to the extreme of meeting on the battlefield. Conflict and confrontation are of no interest to anyoneand what the international community should treasure most is peace and security, added the Chinese leader.

The first information from the Chinese state media about the meeting does not offer further details about what was discussed between Xi and Biden about the Russian offensive against Ukraine and does not mention Taiwan, a territory over which China claims sovereignty and which is one of the largest points of friction with Washington.

Today’s meeting comes less than a week after the one held in Rome between US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan and the director of the Office of the Chinese Foreign Affairs Commission, Yang Jiechi.

In the background there is also the alleged request to China by Russia for military help to invade Ukraine, a request published by US media citing officials from that country and that Beijing has described as “completely false” and “pure disinformation”.

Since the beginning of the Russian offensive in Ukraine, China has declared its support for the territorial integrity of all countries, including Ukraine, while avoiding condemning Russian actions and also not defining it as “invasion”, and has called for respect. “legitimate security concerns” of all parties.
