The Spanish Government has announced the beginning of a “new stage” in the relationship with Morocco, based on mutual respect and with a view to guaranteeing both the stability and the territorial integrity of both countries.
The President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, has informed King Mohamed VI that Spain considers the autonomy proposal presented by Morocco in 2007 for Western Sahara as “the most serious, credible and realistic basis for the resolution of this dispute”in a letter released by the Moroccan Royal Cabinet through a statement.
According to the note from the Royal Cabinet, in the message Sánchez underlines that “he recognizes the importance of the Sahara issue for Morocco” and highlights “Morocco’s serious and credible efforts within the framework of the United Nations to find a mutually acceptable solution” to the dispute between Morocco and the Polisario Front by the former Spanish colony.
In the letter, the President of the Spanish Government indicates that “the two countries are inextricably linked by affections, a history, a geography, interests and a shared friendship” and is convinced that “the destinies of the two peoples are also united in the same way” and that “Morocco’s prosperity is linked to that of Spain, and vice versa”.
Sánchez has conveyed to the Moroccan sovereign that “Spain will act with absolute transparency which corresponds to a great friend and ally”. “I assure you that Spain will always keep its commitments and its word”, adds the Spanish president.
In the letter, Sánchez refers to the matter of the emigration and reiterates to the monarch his “determination to face common challenges together, especially cooperation in the management of migratory flows in the Mediterranean and the Atlantic, in a spirit of total cooperation.”
This message occurs months after the crisis between Morocco and Spain in the last two decades, which began at the end of April last year with the reception of the leader of the Polisario FrontBrahim Gali, to be hospitalized in Logroño and the avalanche of irregular immigrants who swam into Ceuta in May.
