Eurasian Economic Union plans to give up the dollar as payment currency

The countries of the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU), a regional economic bloc led by Russia, announced their plans to give up the dollar as payment currency in favor of national currencies such as the Russian ruble.

The issue was raised during a meeting of the Council of the Eurasian Economic Commission, Russian Economic Development Minister Maxim Reshetnikov said.

“A very important issue that was discussed is the matter of mutual transactions in rubles,” the minister told Russian public television.

He added that previously the transactions were carried out in “foreign currency”, referring to the dollar.

“But now we have agreed to gradually move to national currencies,” he explained.

At the same time, he added, that the “main” volume of transactions will be carried out in rubles, so “a single space in rubles has begun to form.”

Simultaneously, the countries of the post-Soviet alliance agreed to analyze some mechanisms to “guarantee the stability of the internal markets of its members, including through measures that affect the export of some agricultural products outside the territory of the UEE,” according to a statement. official.

“The USE is the largest net exporter of agricultural products and therefore we are not threatened by a shortage of basic products. At the same time, the introduction of joint non-tariff regulatory measures will help stabilize the situation with prices on the domestic market, which is especially important in the face of the external situation,” said Andrei Slepnev, trade minister of the Eurasian Economic Commission.
