In Kharkiv, one of the cities devastated by the attack of Russian troops during the invasion of Ukraine, Rostislav has stayed as a volunteer. She has decided to stay there to help, and has shown laSexta the state of the city after the multiple bombardments and attacks that the city has received in recent days. In the very center of the city, the panorama is bleak.
Kharkov is devastated by the missiles of the Russian army. “It seems that a missile has landed right in the yard (of a residential area). It has hit the upper floors“, he explains while showing the images of the horror that Putin’s expansionist desire has caused. The place is badly wounded, and shows an almost ghostly image. Rostislav continues to walk the streets that have lost their daily life while trying to hold back the tears.
“We are not used to seeing our city like this“, says the young man. He is accompanied by his friend, a nurse, who recounts how a missile shrapnel went through his ambulance and injured a colleague, who is currently recovering from a cut to the stomach. In this sort of guided tour, Rostislav makes a stop in front of the Kharkiv City Hall, just this Tuesday two weeks after the explosion caused by a missile that hit the town hall.
Meanwhile, explosions are constantly heard in the street, but he has learned something that reassures him: to differentiate between sounds. “I am listening to the sound of our anti-aircraft defense. We have already learned to recognize it, and it means that we are defending ourselves,” says the young man. In the midst of the drama, hearing bombs from one’s own side is even comforting, as he explained to laSexta.
