Zelensky resigns himself and asks the Ukrainians to forget about a possible entry into NATO

“It has become clear that Ukraine is not a member of NATO. We understand it. We are understanding people. For years we have heard that the doors were supposedly open, but we have already seen that we cannot enter,” said the Ukrainian president.

The President of Ukraine, Volodomir Zelenskylamented this Tuesday that despite having heard “for years” that “the doors” of the NATO they were “supposedly open” in reality they are not and he has asked his compatriots to trust themselves in the war with Russia.

“It has become clear that Ukraine is not a member of NATO. We understand. We are understanding people. For years we have heard that the doors were supposedly open, but we have already seen that we cannot enter,” the Ukrainian president resigned during a videoconference meeting with senior military commanders of the Alliance.

“This is so and I must admit“, has recognized Zelenski, who despite everything has shown hope for the role that the Ukrainians are playing in this warlike conflict initiated by Moscow just over twenty days ago.

“I am glad that our people are beginning to understand this and trust themselves and the partners who help us,” said Zelensky, who at the same time called on these allies to step up the volume of military assistanceespecially as regards the air fleet, reports the Ukrinform agency.

However, he regretted that while Ukrainian airspace needs to be protected “in the same way” as the skies of NATO, “there is always a ‘but'” and he has criticized the “hypnosis” that there would be within the Alliance in the face of the possibility of a “third world war”.

“Ukraine is not asking for Article 5 of the NATO Treaty to be activated. (…) We understand that we are not in the Alliance”, but it has stressed that they need “new formats of interaction” and security “guarantees”.

“What will NATO’s response be to its members if they are already asking how to protect themselves in case, god forbid, Russian planes and missiles fly at them? Russia has attacked our Lviv region. A missile attack 20 kilometers from the NATO borders. Russian drones have already fallen on Alliance territory,” Zelensky recalled.

“We have put forward a proposal so that Ukraine alone can protect its airspace and its people. Those countries that have a common border with Russia should think about how to protect themselves and we are doing everything possible to obtain air defense and aircraft,” he explained.

“Everyone knows what is vital for us, the airplanes“, the Ukrainian president has said, that although he has recognized that “it would have been difficult” to respond to the Russian aggression as it has been until now without this help received, Ukraine “needs more”.
