Last Sunday, Albert Bourla, CEO of Pfizer, gave an interview for the chain CBS in which he announced that currently what they have seen is that a fourth dose of the vaccine against COVID-19 will be necessary.
Two years after the coronavirus pandemic was declared, several countries once again register an increase in COVID-19 cases. However, mortality from the disease has been decreasing, mainly due to the incorporation of vaccines.
COVID-19: Pfizer and BioNTech begin clinical trials of omicron vaccine
The CEO of the company also indicated that a second booster will be necessary, that is, a fourth dose of his vaccine. The data is being submitted to the FDA.
“At this moment, in the way we have seen, a fourth reinforcement is necessary. The protection you get from the third party is good enough, actually pretty good for hospitalizations and deaths. It’s not as good against infections, but it doesn’t last long,” Bourla explained in the interview.
He also added that they are working to create a vaccine that protects against all variants of COVID-19 and that protection extends to at least one year. “And if we’re able to pull that off, then I think it’s very easy to follow and remember so we can really go back to the way we used to live,” he noted.
WHO recommends extending the use of the Pfizer vaccine to children under 12 years of age
Last January, Pfizer and BioNTech began recruitment for clinical trials on the safety and immune response of their omicron variant-specific anticovid vaccine.
Because it is based on messenger RNA technology, it is relatively easy to update to reflect the genetic code of new variants. (I)
