Man is sentenced to a year in prison after killing a dog in the United States

An American police officer has been sentenced to one year in prison and more than four years of probation for having killed a dog and lying to investigators about the circumstances of the animal’s death.

Accused of “acts of torture of a dog”, Richard Chinappi pleaded guilty in November and was sentenced Friday during a hearing in Virginia state court, according to court documents.

On October 19, 2021, Chinappi shot her partner’s beagle. When the police arrived at her home, claimed to have wanted to repel a bear attack -species present in Virginia- but his explanations were unclear, local media report.

The autopsy performed on the dog revealed that he died of gunshots at close range, which contradicted his version of events. The investigation also revealed that there were traces of blood in the kitchen.

Richmond police, who recruited Chinappi in 2016, suspended him. (I)
