Pope Francis regrets that the rulers ‘have not learned lessons from the 20th century’

Pope Francis lamented this Monday that the different wars in the world, and especially the current one in Ukraine after the invasion of Russia, show that “those who govern the destiny of peoples have not learned the lesson of the tragedies of the 20th century.”

He said this when he received today an association of Italian businessmen to whom he asked that politics and the economy “in constant dialogue with each other, put themselves at the service of life and not of death as unfortunately sometimes happens.”

After the great crisis of 2008, it seems that “deep down, the world continues to be governed according to oblique criteria,” he said.

“Several regional wars and, above all, the current war in Ukraine, show that those who govern the destiny of the peoples have not yet grasped the lesson of the tragedies of the 20th century,” referring to the two World Wars.

He also advised that the economy must be “freer from the power of finance and more creative for an integral ecology”, as well as “concrete: neither liquid nor gaseous”.

Even globalization, he added, “must be governed” from below to achieve a new perspective “respectful of the human dimension and the environment.”

The pope has made several calls for an end to the war in Ukraine and this Sunday, after praying the Angelus, he demanded an end to “the massacre” perpetrated in Ukraine after the invasion of Russia and considered it “an unacceptable armed aggression ”. (I)
