Facebook temporarily allows calling death ‘of the Russian invader’

Meta, the company that owns Facebook and Instagram, announced this Friday that, temporarily due to the war in Ukraine, it allows users bypass their rules of use and sending messages that would normally be prohibited such as “death to the Russian invader.”

In a statement, company spokesman Andy Stone explained that exceptions are allowed on a temporary basis for the Russian invasion of Ukraine and that do not include “credible” death threats against Russian civilians.

However, Meta does allow calls for the death of Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Belarusian counterpart Alexander Lukashenkoissued from Ukraine, Poland and Russia itself.

In normal times, all of these messages would be banned from the company’s platforms as they violate its community standards, which prohibit any calls for violence or messages of hate, and would be censored on social media.

The Russian government blocked Facebook in the country last week in response to restrictions that Moscow believes the company has placed on pro-Russian media outlets.

For its part, the Russian Embassy in the United States demanded this Friday on Twitter that the US authorities “stop extremist activities” in Meta and take measures to bring those responsible to justice.

“Facebook and Instagram users did not give the owners of these platforms the right to determine the criterion of truth and confront some nations with others”, they indicated from the Embassy. (I)
