The President of France, Emmanuel Macronhas admitted this Thursday that he sees it as difficult in the short term for there to be a diplomatic solution to the Russian war in Ukrainebut has underlined that the European Union must remain committed to offering a response that is up to the task.

“I am worried and pessimistic. That is why I also believe that Europe must rise to the occasion. Europe is united in the face of this war and that is very important. It must prepare itself for all possibilities,” he said before the start of the Versailles informal summit of heads of state and governmentwhich closes tomorrow Friday.

Macron, host of this meeting since France holds the rotating presidency of the Council of the EU, has insisted that, although he will maintain the dialogue with the Russian president, Vladimir Putinbeing “honest” does not believe that achieving a ceasefire “in the next few hours is a realistic scenario.”

The war in Ukraine, launched by Russia on February 24, is the focus of the agenda for this summit, the first at the level of Heads of State and Government since that offensive and on which its impact and the strategy to follow to maintain European sovereignty.

“The critical elements are in terms of defense and energy. Our short-term will is to fully protect our fellow citizens, our companies, in the face of rising prices.
