After the two failed attempts over the weekend, Moscow announced on Monday the opening of a series of humanitarian corridors to allow the evacuation of the thousands of civilians trapped in key Ukrainian cities besieged by Russian troops.
Of the six corridors departing from the four cities mentioned in the Russian proposal, Kiev, Kharkiv, Mariupol and Sumionly these last two cities have evacuation routes leading to other parts of Ukraine.
Everyone else corridors lead directly to Russia or Belarusa country that is a key ally of Moscow.
The statement adds that the Russian military will carry out “uninterrupted objective control of the evacuation, including the use of drones.”
The Ukrainian government called the proposal “completely immoral” and said Russia was trying to “use people’s suffering to create a television image.”
“This is a way unacceptable to open humanitarian corridors,” said Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk.
“Our people will not go from Kiev to Belarus and then fly to the Russian Federation,” he added.
According to the United Nations, to date more than 1.7 million people have left Ukraine, in what the organization described as the fastest-growing refugee crisis since World War II.
The European Union says that up to 4 million may try to leave the country.
Departure through Ukraine
On Sunday night, Russia sent a letter proposing a temporary ceasefire starting at 10:00 (07:00 GMT) local time on Monday.

In response, Ukraine sent Russia its conditions on exit routes, specifically calling for the opening of corridors to evacuate the population. to the west of Ukrainewhich is further from the Russian border.
The deputy prime minister called on the United States, the United Kingdom and France to assist in the establishment of these corridors.
Ukrainian citizens should be able to leave their homes through Ukrainian territory, said the spokeswoman for the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky.
Moscow reported the opening of the corridors after a “personal request” from French President Emmanuel Macron to Vladimir Putin.
France denied that its president made this request. (I)
