The majority of the Member States of the European Union support the measures that Brussels is considering applying, including private storage aid for pork or the activation of the crisis reserve, to alleviate the impact of the crisis in Ukraine on the European agri-food sector.
The matter was discussed on Monday at a meeting of the special committee on Agriculture, a technical body of the Council (the countries of the European Union).
In it, the Commission announced a series of possible measures to counteract the crisis linked to the invasion of Ukraine, such as private storage aid for pork and the use of the crisis reserve, as well as the forthcoming publication of a report on food securityEuropean sources reported.
The delegations, with “some exceptions”, broadly supported all the measures announced by the Community Executive and agreed with France’s ideathe country that chairs the EU Council until the end of June, to use reserved land to produce protein crops.
Brussels wants private storage to start up as soon as possible, European sources told Efe.
On the other hand, at the meeting some countries “they expressed doubts about the possibility of achieving the objectives of the Green Deal, since they could further undermine the EU’s ability to produce food”, according to the same sources.
There was also a call for the EU to reduce their dependence on certain products from certain countriessomething that was requested among others by Spain, which insisted on the need to reduce dependence on food feed.
At the beginning of the month, the European Commissioner for Agriculture, Janusz Wojciechowski, confirmed that he is studying the possibility of applying exceptional intervention measures in the markets to deal with the effects of the Russian invasion of Ukraine on the agricultural sector.
In particular, he mentioned private storage, which It implies the granting of European aid to temporarily withdraw the product from the market to recover prices, with the aim that by reducing supply, the amounts improve.
Spain has asked the European Commission to adopt urgent measures to ensure supplies to the European market of the products most affected by the war in Ukraine, especially cereals and oilseeds.
The country is concerned not only about prices, but also about the availability of raw materials. (I)
