At least 5,000 people who demonstrated without authorization against the military intervention in Ukraine were arrested on Sunday in 69 Russian cities, the NGO OVD-Info reported on Monday.
This is an unprecedented number of arrests in a single day, much more than during the mass demonstrations in early 2021 against the imprisonment of opposition leader Alexei Navalny.
Navalni, from prison, urged the population to demonstrate every day in the main square of his city to demand peace in Ukraine.
Some 2,300 people were arrested in Moscow on Sunday and 1,253 in St. Petersburg, according to OVD-Info, which specializes in monitoring demonstrations.
Several militants published images on social networks in which brutal arrests were seen, with kicks and blows with batons.
To silence criticism, Russian authorities on Friday adopted a law cracking down on “false information” about the Russian military in Ukraine, with penalties ranging from fines to 15 years in prison.
Those who demonstrate or encourage demonstrations against the Russian military presence in Ukraine are also subject to fines. If they reoffend, they risk three years in prison. (I)
