Dominik Stillhart, director of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), has warned that the humanitarian corridor opened in the Ukrainian city of Mariupol to facilitate the evacuation of civilians andwas mined. Thus, in relation to the problems that these areas are causing, he has pointed out that the agreements are “not very precise” and has clarified that although the parties have been talking for “days”, it is proving difficult for Russia and Ukraine to agree on something “concrete”.
So far only reached “principles of agreement”, has stated in a series of statements to the BBC Radio 4 station. In this sense, he has regretted that, precisely, these supposed agreements “have been broken immediately because are not precise as to the routes that can be used“.
Stillhart has pointed out that ICRC members themselves agreed on a route out of the city on Sunday but they found that “the route that had been indicated to them was actually mined”. “That is why it is so important that the parties reach a concrete agreement so that we can facilitate things on the ground,” she asserted.
On Sunday the NGO confirmed the failure to carry out a second attempt to evacuate civilians of the besieged city of Mariúpol due to the absence of a “detailed and functional” agreement between the parties to the conflict On both sides, the ICRC has recalled that the organization is “a neutral and impartial humanitarian broker” and has recommended setting once in common “a specific time, evacuation places, exit routes and other logistical details.”
The Ukrainian government has also rejected as “unacceptable” the Russian plan to create humanitarian corridors this Monday and evacuate the civilian population of Kiev, Mariupol, Kharkov and Sumy, as the planned route takes the evacuees to Russian cities.
