Radio Televisión Española temporarily stops reporting from Russia

The public corporation Radio Televisión Española (RTVE) has also decided to stop reporting since Russiaafter the approval in that country of a new law that provides for up to 15 years in prison for spreading what the authorities may consider “false information” in relation to the war in Ukraine.

“While the situation created for RTVE professionals by the approval of the aforementioned regulation is being analyzed, RTVE will continue to offer as much information as possible about the situation in Russia and Ukraine, as it has been doing since the beginning of the Russian invasion,” said this Spanish media in a statement released this Saturday.

The public entity thus joins the decision also adopted by the EFE Agency and other media outlets around the world such as the British BBC, the German ZDF and ARD, the Italian RAI, and the Americans CNN and CBS, the Canadian CBC or the Bloomberg news agency, which will continue to report on the conflict from Ukraine and elsewhere.

The new Russian legislation punishes with heavy fines and sentences of between 5 and 10 years in prison the dissemination of information that the Russian authorities consider false about the actions of its Armed Forces in Ukraine and calls for sanctions against the country, as well as for the “public actions” that seek to discredit the actions of the Russian Army in “defending the interests of Russia and its citizens, in the preservation of international security and peace.”
