The director general of the UN nuclear agency, the Argentine Rafael Grossi, criticized this Friday that the security of the largest nuclear power plant in Europe has been compromised by a Russian attack, but, luckily, there were no radioactive leaks. .
“Physical security has been compromised with what happened last night, we are lucky that there was no radiation release,” Grossi said at a press conference in Vienna, in which he said that what happened “is unprecedented” and could have been come to a “dramatic” situation.
Last night there was a Russian attack against the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, the largest in Europe, and the fire in one of its buildings, which was put out by firefighters this Friday at 06:20 (04:20 GMT), after some hours of uncertainty.
“The integrity of the reactors has not been compromised, but that of the plant in its broadest sense,” stressed the Argentine diplomat, who warned of the risks if the fighting continues near nuclear power plants.
Grossi assured that the projectile that hit the nuclear power plant came from Russian forces and reiterated the danger of fighting near these complexes given their great fragility.
The head of the UN nuclear agency indicated that the situation is very “unstable and fragile” and that he is in contact with the Ukrainian nuclear authorities to follow the events, and was willing to travel to the former Chernobyl nuclear plant to see what happens on the ground.
“I am ready to go,” Grossi said, after being asked for assistance by the Ukrainian authorities, and assured that it was time to take action to avoid any further danger.
“If we are going to offer assistance, we have to be there, and the first to go must be the director of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA),” he added. (I)
