Izaskun Bilbao defends sending weapons to Ukraine: “They need our help”

The PNV MEP has opted for a common defense policy in the European Union: “It is not used to make wars, it is used to defend peace”.

Izaskun Bilbao, PNV MEP, has defended on Radio Euskadi’s ‘Boulevard’ the sending of weapons, ammunition and military material to Ukraine. “No one likes war, but I have defended from the beginning that they need our help with weapons. They are defending themselves from an aggression that does not stop,” she says.

The jeltzale has also opted for the European Union to have a common defense policy, something about which, after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, “there is no doubt”. “The Europe of defense is not used to make wars, it is used to defend peace. These dramas that are breaking our hearts teach us that we have to continue working together to maintain peace”, she said.

According to Bilbao, the EU is “up to the task” in the response to the migration crisis. “There is a huge difference with other situations”, she has said, “but from the first moment the doors of all European countries have been open”.

For the MEP, the economic measures adopted by the EU, which in her opinion “Putin would never have imagined”, may allow “it to reject, withdraw and give peace that opportunity through diplomacy and not through deaths and of that war he has created. Likewise, Bilbao wants a “reaction” against the invasion from within Russia, above all by sectors around the president.
