One of the moments that sparked the current conflict between Russia and Ukraine was the recognition of Donetsk and Lugansk as independent territories by Vladimir Putin. This diplomatic tension between the two countries has had enough tools to stop it, but it has not materialized.
What are the Minsk Agreements?
The Minsk Agreements, signed between 2014 and 2015 between the two countries, had the objective of eradicating and ending the conflict, something that was approved but has currently been left in the background due to the latest offensives launched by Russia on Ukrainian soil.
What was approved in the Minsk Agreements?
Mainly, one of the conditions of the agreement signed between the two countries in the Belarusian capital was to put a ceasefire, since the conflict had claimed the lives of many Ukrainian civilians. In addition, it was agreed to withdraw the front-line arms shipment and the pro-Russian separatist troops that were flooding the east of the country.
Also, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) considered an amnesty for all those directly involved in the development of the conflicts.
However, this first attempt at signing the agreement was unsuccessful. A year later, other agreed conditions were transferred to Minsk, where some European leaders, including Angela Merkel and François Hollande, intervened to make sure that everything signed was subsequently fulfilled by Russia and Ukraine.
However, both countries have not respected the commitments signed in Minsk. (I)
