Refugee exodus: Russian invasion already leaves more than a million homeless

More than a million people have fled Ukraine since Russian troops invaded the country on February 24. After a week of war, the director of UNHCR has reported on Twitter that “in just seven days we have witnessed the exodus of one million refugees from Ukraine to neighboring countries”.

Filippo Grandi warns: “It could become the biggest refugee crisis of this century in Europe“. In addition, hundreds of thousands of children are out of school, so the 7.5 million minors who inhabit the country are in danger of facing “a greater risk.”

“For many millions more, inside Ukraine, it is time for the guns to fall silent, so that life-saving humanitarian assistance can be provided“, the head of the United Nations refugee agency has asserted on the same social network.

As reported by UNICEF this Wednesday to laSexta, of the more than 836,000 refugees to date, at least half are minors. This is the case of children like Mark Goncharuk, who managed to save his life thanks to the help of a team from Reuters. His father was not with him: “He has stayed in Kiev. He will sell things and help our heroes, our Army, and may even fight.

The executive director of UNICEF, Catherine Russell, has expressed her concern about the situation faced by children and their families in Ukraine, which “is getting worse by the minute” as the conflict intensifies and attacks on the civilian population increase. “Infrastructure damage has left hundreds of thousands of people no drinking water or electricity. Explosive weapons and war residues in populated areas are real and present dangers,” Russell lamented, in statements collected by the agency itself.
