The US ambassador to the UN, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, accused Russia of mobilizing cluster bombs and other weapons prohibited by the Geneva Convention in its offensive in Ukraine.
Thomas-Greenfield’s remarks come as Russian forces attack several Ukrainian cities while massing troops around the capital, Kiev.
“It seems that Russia is preparing to increase the brutality of its campaign against Ukraine”, Thomas-Greenfield told the United Nations General Assembly.
“We have seen videos of Russian forces moving exceptionally lethal weaponry into Ukraine, which has no place on the battlefield. That includes cluster and vacuum bombs and munitions, which are prohibited by the Geneva Convention.”, he asserted.
He also evoked published images of a Russian troop convoy more than 60 km long, which he claimed is advancing towards Kiev.
Thomas-Greenfield spoke before the extraordinary vote in which the General Assembly demanded that Russia withdraw “immediately” his Ukrainian forces.
An overwhelming majority of countries voted for the non-binding resolution deploring Vladimir Putin’s attack on the former Soviet republic, highlighting Russia’s isolation on the world stage.
