Pope Francis thanked the Poles on Wednesday for their support for Ukraine and the welcome given to Ukrainians fleeing the war after Russia’s attack, which has lasted a week, during his greeting to the faithful of this country in the general audience held in the Paul VI hall.
“You were the first to support Ukraine, opening your borders, your hearts and the doors of your houses to Ukrainians fleeing the war. You are generously offering them everything they need so they can live in dignity despite the dramatic moment” Francis said.
The pope added: “I am deeply grateful to you and I bless you from the bottom of my heart.”
According to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) about 677,000 people have left Ukraine in the first five days of war and more than half of these people have arrived in Poland so far.
The pope instituted for today a day of fasting and prayer for Catholics to stop the war in Ukraine after the invasion of Russia.
Today during the audience he recalled this quote and wished that “prayer and fasting will be a plea for peace in Ukraine, remembering that peace in the world always begins with our personal conversion, following Christ.”
“Let us make prayer and fasting the weapons that can defeat sin, and let us implore God for peace in the world, the end of the war in Ukraine and in the other nations that are experiencing the tragedy of armed violence,” he said. Francis last Wednesday announcing this Day. (I)
