The Russian communications regulator, Roscomnadzor, today blocked radio broadcasts and websites echo of moscow and the tv channel Dozhd, both outlets critical of the Kremlin.
Roscomnadzor’s decision was prompted by a demand from the Russian Prosecutor General’s Office, which accused the media of deliberately and systematically publishing “calls for extremist actions, violence, and false information about the actions of the Russian military in the special operation”in Ukraine.
Both the opposition channel Dozhddeclared a “foreign agent” by the Russian authorities, as the broadcaster echo of moscow they are one of the few media outlets that give a platform to opponents of the policies of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Director of Echo of Moscow, Alexei Venediktov, announced that it will appeal the regulator’s decision, which it considered as “the implementation of censorship, which is expressly prohibited by the Constitution.”
Despite the official blockade, the station continues to broadcast on the internet on other platforms such as YouTube and YandexZen.
The Russian Prosecutor General’s Office warned citizens last Sunday, three days after the start of the “special military operation” in Ukraine ordered by Putin, that any aid to a foreign state during this campaign will be described as “high treason”, crime punishable by up to 20 years in prison.
