Russia and Ukraine will hold a second round of talks this Wednesday

The first round of negotiations took place on Monday and produced no results. Moscow would have demanded that Kiev recognize the independence of Donetsk and Lugansk and withdraw the request that Crimea be returned to Ukraine. Kiev requested an immediate ceasefire and the withdrawal of Russian troops.

The second round of talks between Russia and Ukraine is scheduled for this Wednesday, March 2, the Russian news agency TASS reported, citing a source on the Russian side.

After the first round of negotiations which took place on Monday and produced no tangible results, the parties had said they would meet again in the coming days.

Sources from the Ukrainian delegation that met on Monday with Russian representatives in Belarus have also given details about the proposals made by the opposing parties in the first meeting, as reported by the newspaper Zerkalo Nedeli and the news portal Glavcom.ua.

Among other issues, Moscow would have demanded that Kiev recognize the independence of Donetsk and Lugansk and withdraw the request that the crimean peninsula be returned to Ukraine.

The Ukrainian authorities, according to Glavcom, requested an immediate ceasefire and the withdrawal of Russian troops from the territory.

The Russian and Ukrainian delegations began negotiations last Monday in Pripyat, on the Ukrainian-Belarusian border. The first meeting ended without agreement. Despite this, both parties agreed to continue negotiating.

The negotiations held in the Gomel region ended after five hours of talks. According to Kiev, “certain progress” was made in the negotiations. “The parties have outlined some priority issues on which some progress is in sight,” said the adviser to the Ukrainian presidential office, Majail Podolyak, in a video broadcast on Telegram.

The Ukrainian delegation was made up of the head of the People’s Servant, David Arajamia; Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov; the adviser to the Presidency Mijailo Podoliak; and Deputy Foreign Minister Mikola Tochitski, among others. The Russian delegation included representatives of the Presidential Administration, the Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, as well as the State Duma.
