The death of the teacher and congressman from the southern region of Tacna, 55, was confirmed this Monday when Parliament had been debating for two hours.
The Government and Congress of Peru on Tuesday paid a posthumous tribute to the parliamentarian of the left-wing Peru Libre party Fernando Herrera, who died on Monday while the investiture vote of the renewed Government of President Pedro Castillo was being debated.
Early in the morning, the legislator’s remains were veiled at the Casa del Maestro, in the center of Lima, and later transferred to the Juan Pablo II chapel, where a mass was celebrated in his honor.
Later, the formal tribute was held at the Legislative headquarters, which was attended by Herrera’s relatives, members of the congressional board of directors, headed by María del Carmen Alva, spokespersons for the parliamentary groups and President Castillo accompanied by his ministers.
During the funeral service, the president of the Congress pointed out that the differences of the members of the hemicycle are now “put aside in the face of this great loss” that “calls for reflection to continue seeking the necessary consensus” to build “a better future” for the Peru.
“The best tribute for Fernando is the renewal of our commitment to our country, that country that he wanted and felt from Tacna, which is the place where the country is born and where Peru is especially felt,” added Alva.
For his part, Castillo called for the unity of the powers of the State “to consolidate this country that needs a lot of its children and authorities,” and dedicated a few words to Herrera, a member of the party that brought him to power and with whom he shared his vocation as a teacher.
“Brother, leave us your fight, leave us your strength, your courage, love for your country, love for your people. We are not going to let you down. If we have to give the cause, if we have to give our lives for a more just, more sovereign, more dignified people, we are ready to do it, “said the president.
The event also included the interventions of the spokespersons of the different benches of the hemicycle, who expressed their condolences and solidarity with Herrera’s relatives.
A scheduled debate
The death of the teacher and congressman from the southern region of Tacna, 55, was confirmed this Monday when Parliament had been debating for two hours after the presentation of the general policies of the Executive that the Prime Minister, Mirtha Vásquez, had made hours before.
The news suddenly interrupted the investiture session, which was finally suspended and rescheduled for 9:00 (14:00 GMT) on Thursday, November 4, as a sign of mourning, as announced by the president of the Legislative Assembly.
In that debate, the Council of Ministers led by Vásquez, on whom Castillo based a turn to the moderation of his Government after leaving the ministers of the most radical wing of Peru Libre, will play its future. (I)
