A group of armed hitmen has murdered at least a dozen people who had attended a wake in the municipality of San José Gracia, in the western Mexican state of Michoacán. The multiple homicide, in which according to the first information 17 people would have died, was recorded in a video that circulates on social networks where you can see armed men who get out of trucks and execute the victims who are against a wall.
According to information from local media, the massacre took place outside the wake, where the armed group arrived and took the victims out and then shot them. The homicides would have occurred in a region where the Jalisco New Generation Cartel holds control of the territory. Citizens of San José de Gracia have used social networks to reveal that the attack would have claimed the lives of at least ten people, and have called on the inhabitants to take shelter in their homes.

The Ministry of Public Security (SSP) of Michoacán indicated that it received a report of “firearm detonations”, for which they deployed an operation with the Army and the National Guard. He stated that the objective of said operation is to locate those responsible and clarify the facts.
At night, the State Prosecutor’s Office issued a statement in which it assured that it had initiated an investigation into the events that occurred on Sunday afternoon. They explain that upon arrival at the place where gunshots were reported, the site “was recently washed, no victims were found”. However, he detailed that containers of cleaning products were found. In addition, used firearm cartridges of calibers 9 millimeters, 7.72, 5.56 and 45 millimeters were collected and a motorcycle and two vehicles that had damage from firearm shots were seized.
Likewise, he pointed out that agents of the National Guard, the Mexican Army and the State Police, maintain a operation in the limits of Michoacán and Jalisco to search for the possible victims of the armed attack. The homicides would have occurred in a region where the Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG), La Nueva Familia Michoacana and Los Caballeros Templarios cartels operate, which are fighting blood and fire for control of illicit activities in the region.
In 2021, Michoacán ranked third nationally in terms of the absolute number of intentional homicides, with 2,732 murders, according to official government figures. Mexico registered 33,308 homicides in 2021 after the two most violent years in its historya, under the mandate of Andrés Manuel López Obrador, with 34,690 murder victims in 2019 and 34,554 in 2020.
