War in Ukraine: the first Spanish evacuees arrive at Barajas Airport

More than 100 Spaniards have been evacuated from Ukraine this very morning. Specifically, 106 Spaniards have landed at Barajas Airport from Krakow, where they have been received by the Minister of Foreign AffairsJose Manuel Albares.

In addition, another 40 Spaniards have decided to remain in Poland or return by their own means to Spain “Because they have family or because they are going to make the trip directly to other parts of Spain and they have not wanted to use the plane provided by the Government.”

The plane has been chartered by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, EU and Cooperation, and it was planned that the 140 people who expressed their intention to leave to the Spanish Embassy would travel from the country and who remained in Ukraine following recommendations to leave.

The minister has expressed his “relief” at the Madrid airport because the repatriated Spaniards “can resume their lives, protected in a country where there is freedom and democracy“.

Among the people evacuated is José Antonio, a man who has claimed to feel privileged to have been able to leave the country. “We called the embassy and it behaved wonderfully. Many children have stayed at the border. They are still blocked trying to reach Poland. No type of war is justifiable,” he lamented.

As he explained, one of the biggest problems crossing the border was that his son had just turned 18: “When they introduce the passport and the alarm goes out that he has to do the military, a sergeant makes him get out of the car. He explains that he has to fight and take a kalashnikov. Thanks to the embassy and because that man had a heart, we were able to leave,” he said.

On the possibility of getting more Spaniards out of Ukraine, Minister Albares has assured that currently “it is not possible”: “What we can do best is to recommend that they exercise extreme caution, that they limit movements.”

“When possible, in the short term it doesn’t seem like it, we will go for them. We are in contact with them, we call them every day. We have enabled emergency numbers“, the minister asserted.
