Negotiations between Ukraine and Russia begin today

On the fifth day of war, both delegations will meet at the border between Ukraine and Belarus. Zelenski has advanced that he does not expect major results from that meeting. Ukraine claims to be holding back the advance of Russian troops.

It is planned that this morning, on the fifth day of war, delegations from Ukraine and Russia start talks on the Ukrainian-Belarusian border. They will be the first talks since Russian troops entered Ukraine with the aim of “demilitarizing and denazifying” the country, as Russian President Vladimir Putin said.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has declared that he agreed to the meeting so that later not a single citizen of Ukraine has the slightest doubt that he tried to stop the war when there was still a chance to do so. Of course, he has admitted not having high expectations. In turn, the Ukrainian Foreign Minister, Dmitro Kuleba, assured that Ukraine “is not going to capitulate or surrender a single inch of its territory.”

Ukraine reported on Sunday afternoon 352 civilians killed and almost 1700 wounded. The Ukrainian war report also includes more than 4,300 Russian military dead on the offensive, a fact that has not been verified due to the open war situation.

The Ukrainian military command has declared that “all attempts by the Russian occupation troops to fulfill their objectives have failed” and to storm the outskirts of the capital. Colonel General Oleksandr Syrski, Commander-in-Chief of the Army, stressed that “Russian troops are demoralized and exhausted” to which he added that they have shown they know how to defend their home “from guests we have not invited.”

UN General Assembly

The Security Council of the UN has approved this Sunday in a emergency meeting refer the Russian invasion of Ukraine to the UN General Assembly given the impossibility of approving a sentence in the Security Council due to Russia’s veto. This new vote has been carried out in such a way that none of the five permanent members of the Security Council, including Russia, is qualified to exercise its traditional right of veto, and only nine votes in favor are necessary for its approval.

The extraordinary convening of the General Assembly would take place this Monday, when the 193 member countries would discuss the resolution condemning the Russian invasion of Ukraine vetoed by Moscow.

The countries of the European Union have reached an agreement this Sunday to allocate €450 million to finance the shipment of lethal weapons and ammunition to Ukraine to help the population defend itself against the invasion led by Russia, a support that will add another 50 million for non-lethal material such as fuel or medical material.

The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) raises 368,000 the refugees Ukrainians who have fled their country due to the Russian invasion that began on February 24, including an estimated 150,000 who have fled to neighboring Poland.
