The president of Ukraine, Volodimir Zelenski, has announced that his country has filed a complaint against Russia before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to obtain a opinion that requires the immediate cessation of the Russian invasion of his country.
“Ukraine has filed a complaint against Russia with the ICJ. Russia must be held accountable for manipulate the notion of genocide to justify aggression“, the president has declared through Twitter, to which he added: “We request an urgent decision ordering Russia to cease military activity now and we hope that the procedures will begin next week.”
The court, based in The Hague, is a mechanism that both Russia and Ukraine have used in recent years around the conflict in the Donbas regionwhich pits the Ukrainian Army against the Donetsk and Lugansk separatists.
In this sense, it should be remembered that the ICJ is an international court dedicated to settling disputes between countries in accordance with International Law. However, it has no way of enforcing its rulingssomething that practically remains to the will of the states.
