Vladimir Putin’s government authorities have threatened to crack down on any “unauthorized” demonstrations in Russia against the war in Ukraine, where he launched a wide-ranging military operation a few hours ago.
In a statement, the Russian Investigative Committee warned its population of the legal repercussions faced by anyone who participates in unauthorized protests related to “the tense situation in terms of foreign policy”.
The Committee said it was reacting to calls on social media to protest Putin’s decision to attack Ukraine.
“They must be aware of the negative legal consequences of these actions, in the form of accusations that could carry criminal responsibilities,” he explained.
The Russian Interior Ministry said it will take “all necessary measures to ensure public order.”
Russia has strict legislation to control demonstrations that often end in mass arrests.
Russian social networks are calling to take to the streets to protest against the invasion of Ukraine.
The independent human rights watchdog OVD-info said that 27 people had already been detained in different parts of Russia for protesting against the war.
The Russian opponent, Alexei Navalni, imprisoned since January 2021, said in court, during a new trial against him that began last week, that he was against the invasion.
“I am against this war,” according to a video published by the opposition channel Dojd.
“This war between Russia and Ukraine is being waged to cover up the robbery of Russian citizens and to divert attention from the problems that exist within the country, from the deterioration of the economy,” he added.
