“We heard the noise of the bombing at the airport”: The alarming testimony of the Spanish handball player Carlos Molina, trapped in Ukraine | International | News

The Russian army entered the city of Kiev, in Ukraine, where the members of the Motor Zaporozhye team were trapped. One of his players, the Spanish Carlos Molina, gave testimony of him being trapped at the airport, while the loud explosions of the bombing were heard.

At 30 years old, the 2-meter-tall player decided to emigrate to Eastern Europe and is currently playing his second season in the renowned Ukrainian quintet, in which he stands out with his talent on the court, reported the newspaper As.

And while they were fulfilling a meeting arranged in the Champions League of the European Basketball Federation (EHF), in Slovakia, the athletes boarded a charter flight at 8:00 p.m. to return, and there they lived the minutes more distressing when they are trapped before the warlike onslaught of foreign troops.

The bombings are heard throughout Kiev, says Molina from Ukraine

Affected by the Russian attacks on Ukraine, the Hispanic athlete said that they could not leave the country, after flying and failing to land in the team’s host city, Zaporozhye, the Marca newspaper published.

Despite the fact that commercial flights are suspended, Motor owns a private plane and transported the team members.

We were returning by charter to Zaporozhye and when we were about to land, the captain received a message that he could not do it there, but had to go to Kiev. During those two hours we were told that we had to evacuate the airport. Already in the parking lot, we were listening to the noise of the bombing in the distance of another airport in the city

He described what they saw flying over the fighter planes, while they found what to do to escape from the airport and reach a place to take refuge.

We spent about 40 minutes without knowing what to do, trying to get the club manager to find a solution. He found a hotel, but we have been walking with all our luggage bags… because there is no private transport. Then we had to take a bus, a train and after 3 hours, we arrived at the hotel where we are

The situation is unsettling, and Molina recalls how lucky her fellow Ukrainian natives can be. “This morning from the hotel I see an endless line of trucks. Several military transports have passed, with tanks and we hear echoes of a bombardment, but we don’t know at what point. The Ukrainian players of my team can be called up by the Army to defend the country”.

The Cordovan player apologized at noon this Thursday, February 24, 2022, on his Twitter account, for not being able to respond to the media and recounted how they are trying to leave the Ukrainian capital aboard a bus.

“Sorry, I have like 100 media outlets wanting to contact and know something. We are in a bus full of board, players and flight personnel, trying to leave Kiev, in the direction of Zaporozhye. It is our only option, the rest of the roads are very collapsed, kilometers of cars (automobiles) to the border. (I)
