The leaders of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) will hold a videoconference summit on Friday to discuss the military actions initiated by Russia in Ukraine, diplomatic sources confirmed on Thursday.
Meanwhile, NATO announced this Friday in a statement that its member states had decided to take “additional steps” to strengthen “defense throughout the alliance.” “Our measures are preventive, proportionate, and non-scalable,” the text states.
The ambassadors of the countries of the military alliance held an emergency meeting in Brussels on Thursday morning to discuss a response to the situation in Ukraine.
Simultaneously, from various European capitals there were calls for an urgent summit of leaders.
In the early hours of this Thursday, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg condemned the Russian military operation in Ukraine, which he defined as an “irresponsible and unprovoked attack, which puts countless civilian lives at risk.”
Stoltenberg considered that the attack represents “a serious violation of international law and a serious threat to Euro-Atlantic security” and called on Russia to cease its military actions immediately and respect Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
