Sánchez calls on Putin to comply “with international law” and assures that “the EU will help Ukraine”

The Spanish government has firmly condemned the attack orchestrated by Putin, which has sparked war in the Ukraine.

In an institutional statement, after meeting with the National Security Council, Pedro Sánchez has called the Russian president to put an “end to hostilities” immediately and that “complies with the agreements and institutional law”. He also wanted to make it clear that “Spain will go out of its way” to restore peace in Eastern Europe.

“The first thing I want to convey is the resounding condemnation that our country makes of the unacceptable military actions of the Putin government in Ukraine. The facts are very serious. A nuclear power has violated international law and the invasion of a neighboring country has begun while has threatened retaliation against any other nation to help the attacked country”. These are the words with which the leader of the Executive has started his appearance and with which he has condemned this military intervention.

As the Foreign Minister did this morning, Sánchez referred to what happened as “a flagrant violation of international law and national sovereignty” and spoke of “a frontal attack on values”. Therefore, he has said, Spain “will defend international legality, will go out of its way to restore peace and show solidarity with the affected populations”. “We are committed to peace and the way in which we must guarantee it,” he has sentenced.

He also announced that the European Union has approved a package of sanctions “with the aim of preventing further aggression” by the Putin government, which “has already cost too many lives.” And it is that, as he has pointed out, the community allies want to “demonstrate that the Violations against international law and territorial sovereignty must not and cannot go unpunished”.

An appearance with which he has also made reference to the Spaniards who are in Ukraine. In this sense, he has assured that “the Spanish embassy in Kiev has been in contact” with all of them for a few weeks. Of the 436 Spaniards registered at the embassy, a hundred have already returned to our country. The rest may be evacuated “when the situation allows.”

Regarding the consequences that the conflict is going to have in our country, Pedro Sánchez has assured that his Government will take “how many measures are necessary to mitigate the economic and energy impact”.

The international condemnation

The international community has also strongly condemned this “unjustified” attack and warned that “the Kremlin” will be held accountable for Russian aggression. Thus, the international community has threatened Russia with making it pay a high toll. As laSexta has learned, in the north of Brussels, at the NATO headquarters where the ambassadors of all the countries of the Atlantic Alliance are meeting, the military plans of all the countries on the eastern front could already have been approved.

“NATO unites and activates all the military contingents of all those partners that are in the area near Ukraine and Russia. It is therefore a new military escalation“, explains Alexandre Mato, laSexta’s correspondent in Brussels. “The attack is against Europe.” That is the translation made by the European Union of Putin’s offensive in Ukraine.

The White House has issued a statement informing that Joe Biden will meet with his G7 counterparts to address the joint response and has warned – on behalf of the entire international community – that NATO allies will coordinate to “ensure a strong and united response to dissuade any aggression against the Alliance”.

In a forceful way they have also positioned themselves from Brussels. Ursula von der Leyen has assured that they will not allow “President Putin to bring down Europe’s security architecture” and has urged him not to underestimate “the determination and strength of our democracies”.

Meanwhile, the Secretary General of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, has lamented that Moscow has chosen the “path of aggression”, “Strongly condemning Russia’s reckless and unprovoked attack on Ukraine, which puts countless civilian lives at risk.” Boris Johnson has also warned that “the West will not stand by” while Russia attacks and the Italian Prime Minister has pointed out that his country “is close to the Ukrainian people and institutions at this dramatic moment.”
