Ukraine calls for an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council

Ukraine has requested a urgent new meeting of the UN Security Council regarding the situation in the country, according to its Foreign Minister, Dmitro Kuleba. The petition comes after the self-proclaimed people’s republics of Donetsk and Lugansk have asked Russia for military help.

In addition, the president of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, would have called Putin because “the Russian offensive would have begun“, but this would not have answered the call to try to establish those relationships.

For Kuleba, “the call by the occupying powers of Donetsk and Luhansk to ask Russia for military assistance”, represents “further escalation“in the crisis.

Indeed, the self-proclaimed “People’s Republics of Donetsk and Luhansk” have asked for help from Russian President Vladimir Putin, relying on the friendship, cooperation and mutual assistance agreements signed last Monday in the Kremlin by both republics and the Russian government.

Predictably, Ukraine will find allies who support the urgent call of the Council, since Russia’s movement to recognize these republics has aroused great international rejection, as has been manifested in the General Assembly, where the majority of speakers have criticized Moscow’s action.

Last Monday, the situation in Ukraine already gave rise to another urgent meeting of the Council, which was held -something completely unusual- at night, with the meeting serving only for each party to present its theses, and once again it was clear that Russia has at least with the tacit support of Beijing, whose representative refrained from criticizing the latest Russian move.

The United States detects new deployments on the border

A private American company has collected satellite images showing a series of new deployments in western Russia, many of them within 10 miles (about 16 kilometers) of the Ukrainian border and less than 50 miles from the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv. Also through Google Maps and other applications, military caravan traffic is being observed in the area.

This deployment so close to the border makes think to the Pentagon that Russia he already has his troops ready to invade Ukrainean invasion that could be imminent.

The EU and the United States will respond with “more severe measures”

The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, and the Secretary of State of the United States, Antony Blinken, have shown prepared to adopt “more severe measures”.

During a phone call between the two diplomats to “discuss Russia’s aggression and illegal actions against Ukraine”, both blocs reiterated that they “remain united”.

“We are prepared to respond to the possible next steps with more severe measures,” explained the head of European diplomacy with a message on his Twitter profile. A “disposition” to impose “powerful additional sanctions” on Russia if it advances in its invasion of Ukraine, which the US Secretary of State has also highlighted.
