the ukrainian president, Volodimir Zelenski asked on Wednesday for security guarantees from Western countries and Moscow.
“Ukraine needs clear and concrete security guarantees, immediately,” from both Western countries and Russia, Zelensky told a news conference.
“I think that Russia should be among the countries that give us those guarantees”, he insisted, recalling that he had proposed on several occasions to meet with his counterpart Vladimir Putin to seek solutions to this crisis.
The Ukrainian president thanked his Polish and Lithuanian counterparts for their support and for the deliveries of weapons and military equipment.
“We are united in the conviction that the future of European security is decided right now at home in Ukraine,” Zelensky said.
Western countries believe that Russia, which deployed 150,000 soldiers on the borders with Ukraine, can carry out a full-scale invasion in this neighboring country.
On Monday, Russia recognized the independence of two pro-Russian breakaway regions in eastern Ukrainethe ‘republics’ of Donetsk and Lugansk, and paved the legal way to send troops to this area, although the decision has not been taken for the moment.
