Elon Musk and his lawyer are escalating their battle with stock market regulators in the US, with one of the lawyers accusing them of leaking sensitive information and Tesla’s CEO saying on Twitter that government corruption is being exposed.
Musk’s tweet on Tuesday morning and a letter from his attorney Alex Spiro on Monday to a federal judge offered no details of the leak, but the actions escalated a war of words with the US Securities and Exchange Commission. ).
The agency isn’t the only federal regulator Musk is feuding with. The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has recently increased its measures against Tesla.
Last week, Musk called that agency the “anti fun police” for forcing Tesla to remove a “Boombox” feature that can play sounds with an external speaker and block audible warnings to pedestrians.
The NHTSA has launched numerous investigations into Tesla and oversees 15 car recalls called by the company since January 2021. Among the recalls is the software “Full Self-Driving” that was programmed to run stop signs at low speeds. The investigations include one of the sudden braking that Tesla vehicles perform.
On Monday, Spiro filed another letter with federal judge Alison Nathan in Manhattan accusing at least one SEC member of leaking information about an investigation into Musk and Tesla’s compliance with a court order aimed at monitoring their tweets.
“It has become increasingly clear that the commission has engaged in retaliation against my clients for exercising their First Amendment (free speech) rights.”Spiro wrote.
On Tuesday, Musk tweeted that the allegations simply “they are showing the first layer of the onion of corruption. stay tuned”. No further details were given.
The SEC declined to comment on Tuesday and did not respond to messages about the leak allegations made by Musk and Spiro.
