Germany halts Russian-German gas pipeline approval in response to escalating tensions in Ukraine

This is “Nord Stream 2”, a strategic infrastructure to transfer gas supply from Russia. The final trigger to paralyze the approval has been the recognition by Russia of the independence of the Ukrainian regions of Donetsk and Lugansk.

The Government of Germany will paralyze the approval process of the gas pipeline North Stream 2a strategic infrastructure to move supply from Russiain response to the escalation of tensions in Ukraine.

The pressure on the chancellor, Olaf Scholz, to adopt a decision in this regard had been growing in recent weeks and the final trigger was Russia’s recognition of the independence of the Ukrainian regions of Donetsk and Lugansk.

The gas pipeline, which connects Russian reserves with western Europe through the Baltic Sea, is now complete, but its operation was still pending operating certificates in Germany.

The chancellor has confirmed this Wednesday that he has asked the Ministry of Economy to withdraw a report on security of supply, an essential document to obtain final certification. “It seems technical, but it is a necessary measure in administrative and legal terms,” ​​Scholz said.

Berlin now wants to reassess the continental scenario taking into account “what has changed in recent days”, in the words of the Social Democratic leader. Scholz has put forward that “the current situation is completely different” from what it was just a few months ago.
