Colombia decriminalizes abortion up to 24 weeks of gestation

On a historic day for women’s rights in Colombia, yesterday the Constitutional Court decriminalized abortion up to the 24th week of gestation. In this way, Colombia is the last Latin American country to decriminalize abortion.

The decision of the Constitutional Court was celebrated, as can be seen in the video, by the Green Tidethe movement that fights for the reproductive rights of women in Latin America.

From now on, women who decide to terminate pregnancy in Colombia will not need justification, nor will they have to do them clandestinely. Before this resolution, the only cases in which an abortion could be done in Colombia was for rape, if the life of the mother was at risk or the fetus had some malformation.

This historic step in Colombia makes it possible for Colombian women to abort up to week 24, especially benefiting women from rural areas and with lower incomes. In these cases, it was especially difficult to justify the need for an abortion, since with few resources they could not afford medical tests.

Another victory for the Green Tide

The Green Tide is a feminist movement that fights for sexual and reproductive rights of women. In Latin America, the Green Tide spreads through all the countries conquering the right to decide whether to continue with the pregnancy or to abort.

A continent where the conquest of reproductive rights is slow and gradual and is held back in most cases by a conservative and Catholic morality present in most of the territory.
