France will not allow importing meat from animals treated with growing antibiotics

France will put an end to imports of meat from animals treated with antibiotics to promote their growthwhose use has been prohibited in the European Union (EU) since 2006, the Government reported on Monday.

The Official diary must publish on Tuesday the decree that prohibits the importation or marketing of these products for a year.

The text gives professionals two months to “ask your suppliers and make sure that the meat does not come from a farm that uses antibiotics for growth”, declared to the AFP Agriculture Minister Julien Denormandie.

Outside the EU, where it has been banned since 2006, some farms add antibiotics to animal feed to promote growth and not for therapeutic purposes.

This practice is being questioned for its contribution to the appearance of microbes resistant to antibiotics used for treat human or animal infections.

It is “nonsense in terms of environmental health” and “an aberration in terms of sovereignty, by making our beautiful and respectful local productions compete (…) with products from productions that still use these growing antibiotics,” according to the minister. .

Denormandie cites as an example countries poultry exporters such as Brazil, Ukraine and Thailand.

The ban on importing these products se expected at European level by the end of January 2022 at the latest.

For Bruno Dufayet, from the meat sector interventional organization Interbev, this measure will only be 100% effective “if it is applied to the entire European market.” (I)
