EU sanctions two people and two groups linked to Al Qaeda and the Islamic State

The European Union on Monday extended its list of sanctions to those involved in the planning and execution of terrorist attacks in Afghanistan and its neighboring countries, to include in it two groups and two people linked to the Al Qaeda network and the Islamic State group (EI) operating in this area.

The Council reported in a statement that those sanctioned are the entityAl Qaeda in the Indian subcontinent” (AQIS, a regional branch of Al Qaeda) and its leader osama mahmoodas well as Aziz Azam, ISIL-K spokesperson (Islamic State Khorasan Province), and “Da’esh-Hind Province”, which is an IS-affiliated group operating in India.

These people and entitiespose a serious and continuing threat to regional and international stability” and, with its propaganda activities, also “have played a key role in promoting the violent jihadist ideology of Al Qaeda and Daesh (IS) and in incitement to commit terrorist acts in support of these organizations,” the council said.

The sanctions of the European Union imply a freezing of assets to the entities and a travel ban and asset freeze on affected individualsin addition to a ban on people and entities in the EU from making funds available to those sanctioned, thanks to a regime that the EU has applied autonomously since 2016.

The EU remains committed to taking decisive action against those who continue to threaten international peace and security by planning, financing and committing terrorist attacks, and by spreading their deadly terrorist propaganda around the world”, assured the Council in a statement. (I)
