Pro-Russians in eastern Ukraine ask Vladimir Putin to recognize their independence

The leaders of the self-proclaimed people’s republics of Donetsk (DPR) and Lugansk (PLR) in eastern Ukraine today called on Russian President Vladimir Putin to recognize them as independent states.

The request, in two televised messages broadcast by the Russian television channel Rossía 24, was made by the leader of the DPR, Denis Pushilin, and by that of the RPL, Leonid Pásechnik.

“On behalf of all the peoples of the Donets People’s Republic, we ask you to recognize the Donetsk People’s Republic as an independent, democratic, social and legal state,” Pushilin said.

He argued the request for recognition with the need to acquire the status of an international subject in order “to be able to fully counteract the military aggression of the Ukrainian authorities and avoid victims among the civilian population and the destruction of infrastructures.”

“Dear Vladimir Vladimirovich (Putin’s patronymic), in order to prevent the massive death of the inhabitants of the republic, I ask you to recognize the sovereignty and independence of the Lugansk People’s Republic,” Pasechnik said in turn.

In addition, the leader of the RPL requested to study the possibility of signing a cooperation and friendship treaty between Russia and the RPL.

Shortly after, an enlarged meeting of the Russian Security Council began to study the request of the two pro-Russian entities.

“We are going to decide our future steps in that direction, also taking into account the request of the leaders of the self-proclaimed republics of Donetsk and Lugansk for recognition of their sovereignty and the request of the Russian Duma (Lower House) on the same issue.” Russian President Vladimir Putin said at the start of the meeting.
