Russia faces ‘serious, very big threat’ from Ukraine, says Vladimir Putin

Russia faces a “serious” and “very big” threat in Ukraine, President Vladimir Putin said on Monday, amid tensions with Western countries that accuse Moscow of preparing to invade its neighbor.

“The use of Ukraine as an instrument of confrontation with our country poses a serious and very big threat to us,” Putin told an extraordinary security council, stating that Moscow’s priority “is not confrontation, but security.”

Order of pro-Russians from Donetsk and Lugansk

The leaders of the self-proclaimed people’s republics of Donetsk (DPR) and Lugansk (PLR), in eastern Ukraine, called on the Russian president on Monday, Vladimir Putinwhich recognizes them as independent states.

The request, in two televised messages broadcast by the Russian television channel Rossía 24, was made by the leader of the DPR, Denis Pushilin, and by that of the RPL, Leonid Pasechnik.

“We are going to decide our future steps in that direction, also taking into account the request of the leaders of the self-proclaimed republics of Donetsk and Luhansk for the recognition of their sovereignty and the request of the Russian Duma (Lower House) on the same issue” Putin said at an enlarged meeting of the Security Council.
