The president of the Dominican Republic, Luis Abinader, began this Sunday the construction works of the new fence on the border with Haiti, a work with which it is intended to control irregular migration, smuggling and theft.
The fence will cover 160 kilometers and will have an extensive technological deviceaccording to the details offered at the event held near the Masacre River, on the Dajabón border, and in which Abinader was accompanied by the military leadership and representatives of various political parties.
The first stage, 54 kilometers of reinforced concrete, will an investment of 1,750 million pesos (about 30.7 million dollars) and will be ready between seven and nine months.
“We are committed to an intelligent fence on the border, a fence that It will benefit both countries because it will allow much more efficient control of bilateral trade; regulate migratory flows in order to combat mafias with people, deal with drug trafficking and the illegal sale of weapons”, Abinader specified after recalling the serious crisis that Haiti is going through.
With this fence, he added, “We will fight the different forms of organized crime that have wanted to take the border between the two countries as a base” and “we will guarantee security in the border area thanks to the fact that we will be able to drastically reduce irregular migration that violates the sovereignty of the countries.”
“A regulated border is a much safer border”, the ruler stressed in his speech.
The construction of a fence along most of the 391-kilometer border with Haiti was formally announced by Abinader on February 27 last year during his accountability speech before the National Assembly.
A simple fence has already been built on the border, which is at least 23 kilometers long and is divided into several sections, near the steps of the provinces of Jimaní and Elías Piña. (I)
