Zelensky calls for UN Security Council meeting

President ukrainian, Volodymyr Zelenskyrequested this Saturday a meeting of the Security Council of the UN in view of the military escalation around Ukraine and added that a roadmap is needed for a “possible integration of Ukraine into the alliance” of the NATO.

“In the coming weeks it is necessary to seek new security guarantees for Ukraine with the countries of the Security Council and with the participation of Europe, Germany and Turkey,” he stated at the Security Conference being held in Munich.

Zelensky asked if the international community has learned any lessons from two world wars and urged urgent action to repair system failures before a third begins.

“Ukraine longs for peace. Europe longs for peace. Russia says it does not want to attack. There is someone who is lying,” Zelensky said at the Munich Security Conference.

Zelensky then called for greater commitment from the international community, and a review of the current global security architecture.

“The security architecture is broken, maybe it’s too late to fix it. We need a new security architecture,” she said.

Zelensky thanked the countries that have supported Ukraine “with words, with gestures and also with deeds” but regretted that some do not show a clear commitment in favor of the defense of Ukraine, with the shipment of weapons, and that the country does not have a real perspective to join NATO and the EU.

“It is said that the doors of NATO are open. That is very good, but there are no concrete steps,” Zelensky said.

Earlier, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz had said that Ukraine’s entry into NATO was not on the agenda and that it was therefore absurd for Russia to turn the issue into a cause for war.

Zelensky insisted that the world must be clear about Vladimir Putin’s true intentions and recalled the Crimean crisis and the warnings that had been given before.

“A few years ago Vladimir Putin challenged the world order with a speech at this conference. The world reacted with appeasement. Appeasement led to the invasion of Crimea,” he said.

Zelensky stressed that Ukraine is aware of what is happening, that the threat is real and that it is ready to defend itself from aggression but does not intend to respond to provocations.

“If we respond to a provocation the danger would be even greater. But we are willing to defend ourselves,” she said.

The Munich Security Conference is an informal platform in which strategic challenges are discussed and which usually includes senior officials from various countries.
