Ecuador has not asked its students to leave Ukraine, specifies the Foreign Ministry

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ecuador reiterated on Thursday the request for prudence made to Ecuadorians residing in Ukraine and clarified that the Government has not requested students to leave that country.

The Foreign Ministry thus specified some statements made on Wednesday by the Foreign Minister, Juan Carlos Holguín, regarding the students in Ukraine.

“We have proposed that as many Ecuadorians as possible at this time, and who have the possibility of suspending their classes with the authorization of their universities, and can leave for Ecuador, can do so through friendly countries that have supported us, including Spain, which for transit routes on flights from Ukraine to Quito does not request a Schengen visa at its airport, the same as via Amsterdam,” the foreign minister said on Wednesday.

This recommendation “is not a provision or a request to students to leave Ukraine, which is what can trigger panic, among them and their families in Ecuador,” they told Eph on Thursday sources from the Foreign Ministry.

“The foreign minister has not asked them to leave Ukraine,” the same diplomatic sources reiterated.

Minister Holguín detailed the day before that the Ecuadorian Foreign Ministry has been carrying out a census of its compatriots in Ukrainian territory for 15 days and even specified that they have a contingency plan that includes transfers in case the situation becomes more complicated in this country.

“We have asked Ecuadorians to remain prudent and calm, and to communicate permanently through official communication channels. There are many parents who are concerned about the situation of their relatives in Ukraine,” admitted Holguín.

“If things move forward, we have a contingency plan that would mean the transfer of Ecuadorians. We appreciate the support of the European Union (EU) for those who do not have a Schengen visa,” he reiterated.

Likewise, the foreign minister asked Ecuadorians residing in Ukraine to be vaccinated against covid-19, since there are cases of unvaccinated people whose eventual departure from the country may be made difficult by the requirement to present vaccination certificates to enter several European countries where scale is usually done.

On Wednesday, the United States government warned that Russia is concentrating more and more soldiers on its border with Ukraine, which contradicts the announcement that it has withdrawn several military units, and denounced the “false narratives” launched by the Russian Executive.

The tension in Ukraine continued to rise this Thursday with a serious violation of the ceasefire today in the east of that country, where pro-Russian rebels supported by Moscow and the Ukrainian Army have been fighting since 2014 in a conflict that has claimed more than 14,000 lives, according to the UN.
