Alfredo Borrero: We are severely combating drug trafficking

The Vice President of Ecuador, Alfredo Borrero, affirmed this Thursday during a visit to Washington that his country fights drug trafficking “severely” and asked for the “support” of the United States for economic development and investment.

“We are fighting severely, for example drug trafficking, which is an issue that has made life difficult for us lately, but fundamentally what we want is the support of the United States,” Borrero said during a talk at the Atlantic Council.

The vice president stated that after a “dark period” in relations between Ecuador and the United States, the current government led by Guillermo Lasso seeks to “strengthen, improve and recover relations.”

He affirmed that the United States is a “natural ally” for the South American country and admitted that the “pending task” for Ecuador is to ensure that it “favors foreign investors and has laws that protect investment.”

“We are accomplishing this task little by little,” he said.

Borrero claimed that, while some Latin American countries, which he did not mention, seek to “unbalance the region”, Ecuador “is a democratic country, with free elections and has a government that seeks help and alliance with everyone.”

He also explained that the Lasso government is seeking a free trade agreement with China and joining the Pacific Alliance to improve exports of Ecuadorian products, such as roses, cocoa, chocolate, bananas and shrimp.

In the last year, Ecuador broke a record with the seizure of 210 tons of drugs, of which 96 were found in Guayaquil, Ecuador’s main commercial port.

The US Department of the Treasury announced last week economic sanctions against an Ecuadorian and a Mexican drug trafficker linked to the Sinaloa Cartel and the Jalisco New Generation (CJNG). (I)
